Section VI semifinal Monday from Buffalo State: Wilson, Olean, Depew move on

Welcome to the Buffalo State Sports Arena and the first day of Section VI boys basketball semifinals. Three games tonight start with the B-2 semifinal feature Wilson and City Honors. Wilson (11-3) had a solid start to the season but suffered some losses in the Niagara Orleans League late in the season. City Honors (10-4) has standout senior guard Jamaal Carter who has racked up several triple doubles this season.

The other B-2 semifinal between Clevleand Hill and Applied Technologies will be held Tuesday night. The other two semi's on the schedule today are in B1: Olean vs. East and Tonawanda vs. Depew. Check back for updates throughout the evening. And away we go.

B-1 Semifinal: Tonawanda vs. Depew

Depew has taken an 8-5 lead at the end of the first quarter. Mike Ballistrea had four points and Jaden Cotton has four for the Wildcats.

Halftime: Depew leads, 19-14. The Wildcats are moving the ball well on offense. A steal and fastbreak layup by Jon Gemerek gave Depew a 16-9 lead with 4:30 left int he half. Tonawanda had troubles with turnovers and rebounding.

Depew leads, 32-25 after three quarters. A traditional three-point play from Jake Sepncer for Tonanwanda cut the lead to three, 26-23 with 1:52 left after a steal and fastbreak lead pass from Jesse Lakla. But the Warriors commited backcourt turnovers and failed to secure defensive rebounds as Depew went on a 6-0 spurt.

Final: Depew 47, Tonawanda 39

B-1 Semifinal: Olean vs. East

Olean jumped out to an 11-2 lead but East used a 6-0 run to stay in the game. Still at the end of the first quarter, the Huskies have a 12-8 lead.

East comes back but a three-pointer by Nick Schmidt gives Olean a 15-12 lead with 4:09 to play in the half. By my count the teams have combined for 17 turnovers. It is not a pretty game.

Halftime: Game is tied, 19-19. It's a sloppy affair with 22 turnovres between teh two teams. East held an 11-7 advantage in the second quarter, led by Daquawn Griggs who has eight points for the game.

Olean has a nice set play to find Sam Eckstrom under the basket for a laypu and a 29-27 lead at the end of the third quarter.

Final: Olean 48, East 44

B-2 Semifinal: Wilson vs. City Honors

Wilson is getting good looks inside and offensive rebounds while City Honors is spotty with its outside shooting. Wilson holds a 12-11 edge at the end of the first quarter.

With 1:42 left a technical foul was called on the City Honors bench which was rather annimated at the last foul called. For the record, the fouls are 10 against the Centaurs and one against Wilson. City Honors leads, 28-26.

Halftime: City Honors leads, 32-28. Jamaal Carter scored nine points in the second quarter and has 13 in the game for the Centaurs. Tyler Martin leads Wilson with eight points.

City Honors led by as many as 10, but Wilson got some layups off turnovers and good offensive sets to cut into the lead. The Centaurs lead, 48-42.

Final: Wilson 52, City Honors 48. The Lakeman shut down City Honors in the fourth quarter and found enough offense to nab the win and advance.
