Section VI semifinal Tuesday at Buffalo State: CSAT, EA, Amherst advance

Welcome to day two of semifinal madness at Buffalo State. We start off with the B-2 semifinal between No. 1 Cleveland Hill and CSAT. The winner advances to meet Wilson, which defeated City Honors on Monday.

The A-2 semifinals follow with East Aurora meeting Riverside and Cheektowaga facing Amherst.

A-2 Semifinal: Amherst vs. Cheektowaga

After the first quarter, Amherst has a 15-8 lead.

Halftime: Amherst leads, 37-18. It was an impressive performance from the Tigers who found success from outside on offense. Cheektowaga cut the lead to four, 18-14 on two nice scores by Melvin Henley but Amherst responded with back-to-back threes by Johnathan Belton and Ed Doherty to push the lead to 10, 24-14. The Tigers are also playing impressive defense on the guards, forcing turnovers in the backcourt and generally keeping the Warriors from running any type of offense. Most of the points for Cheektowaga have come in transition.

Amherst holds on to a 48-30 lead. Cheektowga played better overall in the third, but too deep a hole to climb out of.

Final: Amherst 63, Cheektowaga 54. The Warriors made a game of it, getting to eight points, 56-48, but ran out of time. Amherst plays East Aurora in the finals at 3:30 p.m., Saturday.

A-2 Semifinal: Riverside vs. East Aurora

After one quarter, East Aurora holds a 10-3 lead.

Halftime: Riverside leads, 20-17. East Aurora went up 14-7 in the second quarter but a 7-0 run stagged by Justice Feggans, including a three-pointer with 4:11 left, tied the game. The Frontiers played more aggressive defense on East Aurora's shooters and quickly converted on the other end of the floor. Riverside went up by four, 18-14, but a three-pointer from Chris Bourne kept East Aurora in the game.

Stan Wier hit a deep three at the buzzer to pull East Aurora within four, 31-27, at the end of the third quarter. A three from Ian Allen has helped the Blue Devils stay in the game as Riverside is aggressive on both ends of the floor to create opportunities.

Final: East Aurora 49, Riverside 42. Three-point shooting keyed the comeback for the Blue Devils.

B-2 Semifinal: Cleveland Hill vs. CSAT

Cleveland Hill spurted to a 6-0 run but better defesne and ball movement by CSAT allowed the Eagles to rally. Game is tied, 12-12, at the end of the first quarter.

Halftime: CSAT leads, 24-21. The Eagles zone seems to be causing troulbe for Cleveland Hill which missed shots, had shots blocked and turend the ball over.

End of the third and CSAT holds a 38-33 lead but Cleveland Hill has started to make plays on both ends of the floor.

Final: CSAT 59, Cleveland Hill 43. CSAT becomes the first Buffalo Charter school to advance to a Section VI final. They will meet Wilson at noon on Saturday back at Buffalo State. Correction: CSAT is the second charter school to make a final. Bad info from Prep Czar Keith McShea.
