Clarence softball honored with state championship page

As we have all school year, The News will pay tribute to the state champions of the spring season as we honor the Clarence softball team as well as the spring's individual champions.

The poster pages will be featured on the sports section's weekly Monday Extra page for the next two weeks. Clarence softball's page is Monday, June 26. That will be followed with a July 2 page on individual champions in track and field as well as girls golf winner Cat Peters of Clarence.

On July 7, a special page will wrap up the 2011-12 as I put together a Power 10 ranking that incorporates all teams from all the seasons of what was another eventful year in high school sports. How did the spring Power 10 shake out? You'll find out when my Prep Talk column is published Saturday.

The winter state championship pages, which were all also published as part of our weekly Monday Extra sports page, included the Section VI girls gymnastics team (April 16); Kenmore East boys hockey (April 23); the Niagara Falls girls bowling and Section VI boys bowling teams (May 7); and Western New York's individual champions in indoor track, wrestling, boys swimming and rifle (May 14).

In the fall, state championship pages were devoted to Orchard Park football (with the All-Western New York team on Dec. 3), girls volleyball champions Eden (Dec. 26) and St. Mary's (Dec. 31), girls swimming champion Clarence (Jan. 9) and the cross country champion East Aurora boys, Barker boys and Maple Grove girls (Jan. 16).

High-quality versions of the championship pages -- from this season and previous seasons -- can be purchased at
