Canisius soccer jumps to No. 4 in NSCAA state poll

The Canisius boys soccer team's state Catholic title earned it a big jump in the New York State rankings of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

In the NSCAA Region II poll, which consists solely of schools from New York, Canisius is No. 4.

The top-ranked team is Arlington of Section I (Dutchess, Putnam, Rockland and Westchester counties), which won the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Class AA title over the weekend; No. 2 is New York City's Martin Luther King, the champion of the city's Public Schools Athletic League; No. 3 is state AA runner-up Brentwood of Section XI (Long Island's Suffolk County).

Canisius is one spot ahead of Long Island's Chaminade, which it beat, 2-1, in double overtime Sunday for the New York State Catholic High Schools Athletic Association title. Chaminade won Long Island's Catholic title last week when it prevailed on penalty kicks after a scoreless tie with fellow perennial power St. Anthony's.

Canisius was unranked in last week's poll.

Last week's poll did include Williamsville East (eighth) and Clarence (12th). This week's poll has Clarence 12th and Lockport 15th.

Clarence and Lockport were co-champions of Section VI Class AA, with Clarence advancing to the state tournament on penalty kicks. Clarence fell in the Far West Regionals; Williamsville East advanced to the Class A state final four before losing, 4-2, to eventual state champion Jericho (eighth in this week's poll).

[UPDATE: Canisius was listed among others receiving votes in the NSCAA national top 25.]

Also, we need to correct what we reported regarding Canisius' state title.

We originally reported that the championship was a first for a boys team from the Monsignor Martin Assocation.

That was incorrect. St. Joe's won the 1995 state Catholic title by beating St. Anthony's of Long Island.

We apologize for the error and it has been corrected in our web story.
