Live from Super Monday hockey: West Seneca West wins Div. II to claim first championship

By Miguel Rodriguez

Niagara-Wheatfield opens Super Monday at First Niagara Center with a 7-2 win over Clarence for its second straight large school playoff title.

Now we bring the Small School final between first-time participant West Seneca West against last year's runner-up Williamsville East. Williamsville East is vying for its second title in three years.

 First period

Some early activity by West Seneca West around Flames net but nothing doing.

Adam Dentico is goalie for Williamsville East who had a 1.50 GAA during regular season. West Seneca West goalie is Dalton Kruger who had a 1.85 GAA and went 11-1-2 in league play during the regular season.

With 5:23 left, after some buzzing around the last couple shifts by Williamsville East in W.S.W zone, Flames break through. Jason Cohen's quick one-timer from slot off pass by Austin Maciok. Will East leads, 1-0.

And 1:18 later, WSW ties it as Jamie Tobias' backhand from the right dot beats Dentico high. Tied, 1-1.

Tobias stopped on decent chance in closing seconds of period.

Tied 1-1 after one period. Decent pace for both teams. WSW better of play early in period. Will East better of play in last half of it.

Second period

Brendan Ebert hits post for WSW with 11:38 left. Still tied, 1-1.

Call a cop! WSW goalie Kruger just robbed Cohen of his second goal of the game with a fine, never-say-die glove save near the goal line after Cohen went around the goaltender with 8:19 left.

Kruger's momentary reward for that save, a 2-1 lead as West Seneca West scores short-handed on a seemingly broken play that apparently wasn't. Brandon Bork's one-touch redirect off a Pat Ciancio pass on the doorstep of the Flames goalie gives the Indians the lead with 6:16 left in the period.

With 12.4 seconds to go, disaster Will East turnover at own blue line leads to 3-on-none break. Dentico makes first stop but rebound gets knocked in with two salivating WSW players on his doorstep. Goal given to Bork although it looked to me Tobias knocked in the rebound. Either way, it's 3-1.

WSW leads 3-1 after two periods. Kruger sensational in goal that period for WSW. Dentico had his moments too for Will East but two late goals for WSW has the Indians a period away from their first championship.

I'm right, they were wrong. Tobias officially given credit for the goal before the start of the third period by the FNC PA announcer.

 Third period

The soccer Ole, Ole, Ole, Ole chant makes an appearance at a hockey game. I think it's Williamsville East fans.

Two-man advantage for 55 seconds with 8:39 left for Will East. Glorious chance to try and get back in this thing.

Point shot through traffic by Austin Bianchi with 8:10 left pulls Will East within 3-2.

As Will East PP ends, long clear finds Tyler Chodkowski leaving box for breakaway but a spectacular glove save Dentico keeps it 3-2.

With 17.1 seconds left, Tobias completes his hat trick. Party time for West Seneca West, leading 4-2.

W.S. West wins first Section VI Small School hockey championship with 4-2 victory over Williamsville East. Jamie Tobias has a hat trick and key stops by goalie Dalton Kruger the key to victory.
