Live from the Section VI track & field state qualifier meet

4:08 p.m. -- It's almost time for the final events, the long-distance races in both the boys and girls categories. In other action, Trevor Barber leads the boys Division II pentathlon with 2,072 points through one day, and Seamus Degan (City Honors, Division II) and Kalen Sullivan (West Seneca West, Division I) claimed the 800-meter titles.

3:40 p.m. -- I'm going to have to lessen on the updates because I forgot my phone's #preptalkcharger and my battery is running low. Will South's Devon Patterson just claimed the boys shot put title with a throw just over 61'.

3:33 p.m. -- The girls 400-meter in Division II is complete, and qualifiers are as follows: Brittany Feldman (Southwestern), Julia Grupp (Holland), Julie Barton (Allegany-Limestone), Josette Dawson (Amherst), Shantel McCart (Clymer), Gabie Montalbano (Amherst), Elizabeth Vohlwinkel (JFK), Hannah Hebdon (Springville).

Live from the Section VI baseball finals at Sal Maglie: Clarence, Will South win

9:17 -- FINAL -- 2-1 CLARENCE: The top of the seventh was a chaotic affair that ended with Armstrong striking out the final batter with a man on third and being mobbed by his teammates. Clarence claims the Section VI Class AA championship 2-1 over Lancaster and advances to the Far West Regionals. Read the full game stories for both of tonight's matchups in tomorrow's Buffalo News. This is Aaron Mansfield signing off. Thank you for reading. Have a great night!

9:06 -- END 6 -- 2-1 CLARENCE: Armstrong got Lancaster 1-2-3 in the top of the sixth. He's been dominant. Stekl allowed an infield single and hit a batter in the bottom of the inning, but he bounced back to close the frame without any damage. We head to the top of the seventh: last licks for Lancaster.

8:54 -- END 5 -- 2-1 CLARENCE: Armstrong walked one batter and a successful but advanced the runner to second with one out, but the impressive hurler closed out the inning without any damage. Clarence jump started its offense in the bottom of the frame. With a man on first and one out, second baseman Bryan Jost doubled to deep right to put runners at second and third with Armstrong coming to the plate. He was intentionally walked for the second time in the game, loading the bars with one out and DH Ryan Jelonek coming up. Stekl walked Jelonek on five pitches to even the score. Stekl struck out first baseman Evan Harof for the second out, but he walked home third baseman Mark Materise to make it 2-1 Clarence. Stekl got left fielder Matt Nawrot on three pitches to get out of trouble.

Clarence's Armstrong is New York's Gatorade Player of the Year for baseball

By Keith McShea

According to Clarence baseball coach Dave Smith, Red Devils senior Mark Armstrong has been named this year's Gatorade New York State Player of the Year for baseball.

Gatorade selects state winners in several sports, then names an overall national player of the year.

Armstrong, who is verbally committed to Pittsburgh, is scheduled to pitch for Clarence against Lancaster in the Section VI Class AA championship game at 7 p.m. Thursday at Niagara Falls.

He pitched a one-hit shutout Friday in a 1-0 AA semifinal victory over Orchard Park in which he struck out 11 in an 87-pitch effort. He hit one batter.

Georgetown Cup opener, softball games postponed

Today's scheduled opener of the Monsignor Martin Association's Georgetown Cup championship series in baseball has been postponed due to inclement weather.

Game One of the three-game series between St. Joe's and Canisius will be played Wednesday at 4 p.m., with Game Two scheduled for Thursday at 4; both games are at Coca-Cola Field. A time and location is to be determined if there is a third and deciding game.

Timon lacrosse's Fields breaks state single-season goal record

By Keith McShea

In a year of some big numbers put up in Western New York high school lacrosse, here is another one: 112 (and counting).

Bishop Timon-St. Jude junior Connor Fields broke the state record for goals in a season today with his six-goal effort in the Tigers' 20-1 home victory over Nichols in the Monsignor Martin Association semifinals.

Fields surpassed the mark of 108, which was set by Billy Kurisko of Nanuet in 1986.

See the New York State list at laxpower.com.

Fields, who committed to the University at Albany last fall, also had five assists while Lewis Vaccaro had four goals in today's game.

Timon has one more game locally with the possibility of another. The Tigers will meet St. Joe's -- which beat St. Francis, 14-11, today -- on Tuesday for the Monsignor Martin title (time and location to be announced). The Monsignor Martin champion will advance to the state Catholic championships downstate, against representative from Long Island or Westchester.
