Clarence's Armstrong is New York's Gatorade Player of the Year for baseball

By Keith McShea

According to Clarence baseball coach Dave Smith, Red Devils senior Mark Armstrong has been named this year's Gatorade New York State Player of the Year for baseball.

Gatorade selects state winners in several sports, then names an overall national player of the year.

Armstrong, who is verbally committed to Pittsburgh, is scheduled to pitch for Clarence against Lancaster in the Section VI Class AA championship game at 7 p.m. Thursday at Niagara Falls.

He pitched a one-hit shutout Friday in a 1-0 AA semifinal victory over Orchard Park in which he struck out 11 in an 87-pitch effort. He hit one batter.
