Live from Scrimmage Saturday (with 28 video highlights)

By Keith McShea

All over Western New York (and New York State), high school football teams are lining up against an opponent for the first time. These past few years, we've been calling it Scrimmage Saturday.

Photojournalist Harry Scull Jr. and I will be hitting a few scrimmages today. I'll have updates and photos in the live blog below, and we'll have some videos posted later today.

We have Tonawanda, Lockport and Canisius on our short list for places to visit -- here's our complete list of scrimmages.

If you are out catching some of the action (before the real action), tweets with the hashtag #scrimmagesaturday will appear in the live blog below.

Just a reminder that our season preview will be published Thursday, just before we get started with Week One of the 2013 football season Friday and Saturday (Sept. 6-7).

We'll have a live chat Wednesday evening at 9 to discuss the upcoming season.

Here are some iPhone video highlights from today, many of which I mentioned in the live blog.

The first one is probably the best one of the day:

Here are other highlights from Canisius' defense against Williamsville South's offense:

Late in the scrimmage-closing session, South hit two nice pass plays with Sam Castronova at quarterback, including a score:

Canisius' had a great session on offense against Williamsville South despite standout running back Qadree Ollison not playing at all (he was not hurt, he was just held out).

From earlier, Canisius' offense against South Park's defense:
