Canisius' Ollison to announce college decision today

By Keith McShea

Canisius senior standout running back Qadree Ollison will announce his college decision today in a ceremony at the Delaware Ave. school.

The 6-foot-1, 220-pound Ollison will announce where he is verbally committing from among his five finalists -- Penn State, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, Syracuse and Wisconsin -- at 3:15 p.m. in Canisius' auditorium. Ollison was offered scholarships by 15 Division I (Football Bowl Subdivision) programs.

The announcement comes one day after the Niagara Falls' native's 17th birthday.

Conjecture by many, including myself, has Pitt and Penn State as his finalists. Ollison said during the summer that he would make official visits to both schools.

Last Monday, Ollison made his official visit to Pittsburgh, which included watching Pitt lose to Florida State at Heinz Field, home of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Ollison did not visit Penn State this past Saturday, as was reported (and is still being reported) by some outlets on Twitter; I was told Ollison did not make the trip due to a travel/timing situation that included Canisius playing its opener Friday night in Rochester.

There are also strong ties to both areas at Canisius. Coach Rich Robbins is a Pittsburgh-area native. Acclaimed Penn State senior lineman John Urschel is a Canisius graduate who has been in frequent contact with Ollison.

Ollison, who was the Buffalo News co-Player of the Year (with teammate lineman Ryan Hunter) last season, broke 2012 grad Mercer Timmis' Canisius career points scoring record (he now has 244 to break the mark of 238) after scoring four touchdowns and running for 195 yards on 20 carries in the Crusaders' 42-15 season-opening win at McQuaid.

Ollison is now tied with Timmis atop the all-time touchdown list with 39, and he is 203 yards away from Timmis’ career rushing mark.

Today's announcement is just a verbal commitment. The official signing period begins Feb. 5, 2014.
