How The News (would have) voted: Preseason polls

By Keith McShea

There is no preseason poll for Western New York football, but that doesn't mean we can''t throw something of a Hail Mary pass even before the game starts.

My ballot, as is usually the case, is fairly strongly rooted in where last year's teams finished up. Here are last season's final polls as well as last year's "How The News voted post" for the final 2012 rankings

Here are our two top 10s:

Large schools

1. Canisius; 2. Orchard Park 3. Jamestown; 4. Sweet Home; 5. St. Joe’s; 6. Bishop Timon-St. Jude; 7. Frontier; 8. Lockport; 9. Grand Island; 10. West Seneca East.

Look out for: McKinley, South Park, all three Williamsville schools.

Small schools

1. Alden; 2. Depew; 3. Randolph; 4. Cheektowaga; 5. Burgard; 6. Cleveland Hill; 7. St. Mary’s; 8. Fredonia; 9. Maple Grove/Chautauqua Lake; 10. Salamanca.

Look out for: Lackawanna, Olean, Eden.

The News has one of the 10 votes in the large and small school polls. The first polls will be published Tuesday in the Scholastic Spotlight. Read “How The News voted” each week here at the Prep Talk blog.
