State football rankings debut with Randolph No. 1 in Class D

By Keith McShea

The New York State Sportswriters Association released its first football polls of the season Tuesday.

Of most interest is that Randolph is the only Western New York team to claim a top spot as No. 1 in Class D, which is no surprise considering they are the state champions and they're off to a dominating 2-0 start.

Also quite notable is that last Friday's clash in Rochester in which Aquinas beat visiting Canisius, 3-0, was indeed for the top ranking in Class AA. Aquinas is first and Canisius sixth. I'd have St. Joe's higher than their 11th spot (obviously I have them first on my large school poll ballot, and the Marauders took the top spot in The News poll).

St. Joe's owns a win over No. 18 St. Anthony's of Long Island, a victory which admittedly might not have the same value we thought it would after seeing that St. Anthony's beat Holy Trinity by a modest score (27-14). Holy Trinity played a close one with St. Francis in its opener and is generally a significant step behind St. Anthony's, which is 8-0 against Trinity since 2004, a run that has included a few blowouts.

Also interesting is St. Mary's making the poll -- but in Class A. I've notified the NYSSWA that we consider St. Mary's a small school in football, and while they are not eligible for any state playoffs, we would certainly consider them a B. The state polls are somewhat insane to compile, and discrepancies such as this happen from time to time; I would expect that St. Mary's might be moved down next week.

Here is the complete local rundown of the state rankings, which can be found at the NYSSWA's Road to Syracuse web site:
