State football rankings (Oct. 29): Sweet Home (A), Randolph (D) remain on top

By Keith McShea

The New York State Sportswriters Association released its sixth football polls of the season today.

That main link goes to the Class AA & A polls and that page includes a link to Classes B, C and D

Some quick items worth noting, and the complete breakdown of local teams in the state poll:

* Canisius and St. Joe's moved up one spot each, but they are still paying for way-too-far drops after losing to out-of-state powers (St. Joe's lost at Cathedral Prep in Erie, Pa. while Canisius lost at Cardinal Mooney in Ohio -- by two!).

* Section V (Rochester area) now has four teams in the top 15 of Class D -- and (shocker!) one of them is a private schools! In Class D! Infuriating! (There's another in honorable mention). Here's my basketball-inspired blog from ... five-and-a-half years ago. It remains infuriating AND depressing that this continues to be how Section V rolls. I'm keeping this note here every week as a reminder that private schools should not be in Class D in any sport.

* Another note on repeat: St. Mary's dropped out of the Class A poll this week after losing to St. Francis (again, if anything, that supports them being a B as opposed to an A; St. Mary's continues to be ranked in our small school poll). My objections are on the record to the NYSSWA; the Lancers should clearly be classified in Class B.

Here is the complete local rundown of the state rankings, which can be found at the NYSSWA's Road to Syracuse web site:

Class AA

1. V-Aquinas (last week: 1); 6. Jamestown (7); 10. Canisius (11); 18. St. Joe's (20). Honorable mention: Frontier (HM), Kenmore West (HM), Orchard Park (HM).

* St. Anthony's (7-1) of Long Island is No. 5 (St. Joe's beat visiting St. Anthony's in Week One, handing the Friars their only loss).

Class A

1. Sweet Home (1); 17. Grand Island (19); T25. West Seneca East (HM). HM: McKinley (HM), South Park (11), Williamsville North (NR).

Dropped out: St. Mary's (HM).

* Section III (Syracuse area) school Jamesville-Dewitt (5-2), which beat Cheektowaga, 13-12, in Week One at the Carrier Dome, had been an Class A honorable mention all season.

Class B

1. IV-Maine-Endwell (1); 3. Alden (3); 9. Burgard (10); 19. Depew (HM). HM: Cheektowaga (9), Eden (NR).
