VIDEO: Jamestown's Jake Sisson wins the Connolly Cup

Jamestown's Jake Sisson wins the 42nd Connolly Cup

UPDATE: Jamestown senior quarterback Jake Sisson, named The Buffalo News Player of the Year, is the 42nd winner of the Connolly Cup.

He is the fourth winner from Jamestown, joining Aaron Leeper (2000), David Hinson (1994) and Roberto Amoroso (1982).

Last year the News Player of the Year (Qadree Ollison and Ryan Hunter of Canisius) and the Connolly Cup (Corey Barczykowski of Alden) winner were different for the first time since 2009, when the News picked Pat McMahon of Sweet Home and the Connolly Cup went to Zack Sopak of Southwestern. The two entities have picked the same player several times, including in 2010 (Joe Licata of Williamsville South) and 2011 (Chad Kelly of St. Joe's).

Usually we're #PrepTalkLive from high school contests, but this afternoon we'll have live coverage of the 2013 Connolly Cup banquet.

The winner of the annual award, given to the most outstanding player in Western New York, is expected to be announced at around 2:15 p.m. during the presentation at Ilio DiPaolo's in Blasdell.

We'll have a live blog set up -- it won't last too long, but it is the best way for the information to get to you instantly and directly. When I tweet the winner, it will show up in the live blog.

The finalists -- who were announced in a special epidode of PrepTalkTV last month -- are:

Nigel Davis, St. Joe'’s senior, 5-10, 180 RB/WR/DB/P/K
Chris Doubek, Randolph senior, 5-9, 170 RB/DB
Lyle Grant, Alden sophomore, 5-6, 165 RB/DB
Austen Lauricella, Akron senior, 5-6, 150 WR/DB/P
Tyler Mascio, South Park senior, 5-10, 175 QB/DB
Matt McCarthy, Fredonia junior, 6-0, 178 RB
Qadree Ollison, Canisius senior, 6-1, 220 RB
Jake Sisson, Jamestown senior, 6-0, 190, QB/DB
Brian Stoldt, Alden senior, 6-0 190, QB/DB
Brandon Thomas, Cleveland Hill senior, 5-10, 190, RB/DB

FYI: There's a chance that some #PrepTalkLive tweets from some afternoon basketball games will appear in the blog -- not that there's anything wrong with that.

Pastor-Cooper Memorial tips off tonight with girls hoops; boys quadrupleheaders Wed. & Thu.

By Keith McShea

There have been some basketball games played already, despite my "#NOHOOPSBEFORETURKEY" tweet last week.

However, as far as I'm concerned, the basketball season starts tonight with the Pastor-Cooper Memorial at Daemen College. There are three girls games tonight followed by two quadrupleheaders for the boys on Wednesday and Thursday.

I wrote a special column last year on the late David Cooper -- who was the driving force behind the event in recent years -- in which I tried to capture the event as well.

Here's the schedule:
