#PrepTalkLive from Manhattan Cup Quarterfinal Saturday: Timon survives (with VIDEO), St. Mary's surges in second half; Canisius, Nichols win big

By Keith McShea

From Quarterfinal Friday to Quarterfinal Saturday.

One day after Section VI set its final fours for Championship Week, it's time for the Monsignor Martin Association to do the same with today's Manhattan Cup quarterfinals: Canisius hosts its game with Niagara Catholic at noon before Nichols and Park meet at 1:30; Bishop Timon-St. Jude hosts St. Francis at noon before St. Joe's and St. Mary's play at 1:30.

Here's a rundown of what's in store from my Prep Talk column Wednesday. You can also watch News pollster Chad Andrews and I discuss the playoff brackets on PrepTalkTV.

While I'll be at one half of the four games, we'll certainly be looking forward to your #PrepTalkLive updates from the others  via Twitter.

Our scoreboard page has a schedule of today's games -- that same page will have box scores as games are reported to us throughout the evening.

Keep track of the action and contribute to it as well in the blog below -- the easiest way to do that is to tweet updates with the #PrepTalkLive hashtag.

We will set up blogs like this throughout the postseason -- we'll monitor games via not only our tweets, but those of high school sports fans and followers who use the #preptalklive hashtag.

We want tweets from all varsity sports every day of the week -- in every season. The #preptalklive blog (and hashtag) -- as it was during football season -- is the place to check out scores from all over Western New York.

The postgame show from the Northtown Center:

How The News voted: Ahh, the postseason is here

By Keith McShea

Every week during the basketball season a panel of voters participates in The News' large and small school boys basketball polls, which are published in today's Scholastic Spotlight.

And every week we let you know, like the title says ... how The News voted. This is just one ballot -- there are nine other voters in each poll.

Here are our previous blogs: last week (Feb. 11), Feb. 4Jan. 28Jan. 21, Jan. 14, Jan. 7; and our first ballot (there was no blog after the second poll as I was on vacation). Here's last year's final poll

And -- as we head into the postseason (today for Section VI, Saturday for Manhattan Cup) -- here's this week's ballot:

VIDEO: Nichols beats Park in OT

By Keith McShea

Here's a link to a writeup of Nichols' 74-72 home win over Park in overtime Saturday

Here's a look at some key plays. On the first one, Tanner Schmit does a great job to finish off a lob play while being fouled.

He ends up landing on Park senior guard Peter Schultz, and note how Schultz walks to the bench holding his arm -- we believe he suffered a separated shoulder on the play when Schmit landed on him. Gutsy stuff. He emerged moments later with a heavily wrapped shoulder.

My bad (chest tap) for not sticking with him on the video, I was enamored (as always) but the BOISTEROUS CALLS ON THE PA during Nichols basketball games :-)

Also notable: Park was able to tie the game up when Nichols inexplicably shot while there was no time on the shot clock. ... On the final play of regulation, the Park bench was upset that the clock had not started on time as Nichols had the ball, and you can see on the video that it looks like the clock started two seconds late.

A fun, competitive game. Seems like Park is playing short-handed as it appeared to have only two or three players on the bench -- and Fred Foster and Hunter Anderson did not appear to be dressed. Park's depth was tested when Schultz was lost for the game and Randy Golda fouled out.
