Lancaster senior Sarah Saba was named to this year's All-Western New York first team for girls basketball.
We notified her of the All-WNY first-team cover photo shoot, but she was unable to attend due to an out-of-town trip with her family. That is why she was not included on the cover of Saturday's paper or in our All-WNY videos.
This was a difficult and unprecedented situation for us at The News.
In the end, the decision was made to include Saba on a six-player first team.
The All-Western New York basketball teams, with extremely rare exceptions, consist of five players on each team. It is part of the excruciating arithmetic we encounter every year: There is always a list of players many agree are among the best, but that list is almost always longer than five. Having a six-player first team is a major exception but, under the circumstances, we felt it was the most appropriate measure to take.
Going forward, when The News makes its All-Western New York team selections (reminder: The News' All-WNY teams are only in football and basketball), we will clearly stipulate that selection to our All-WNY teams is contingent on the athlete being able to attend the photo shoot.
