#PrepTalkLive from Championship Week Wednesday: NICHOLS UPSETS CANISIUS, 57-50; Timon beats St. Mary's in OT

By Keith McShea

It's Championship Week in boys basketball, with big games in both the Manhattan Cup and Section VI playoffs, while there is girls basketball playoff action today as well.

I'll be at Canisius High School for the semifinals, as Canisius meets Nichols at 6 p.m. followed by a terrific game of Bishop Timon-St. Jude vs. St. Mary's at 7:30.

At Buffalo State, Championship Week continues with a tripleheader of games in Class B-2 (Salamanca vs. Cleveland Hill, 5:30 p.m.) and the A-2 semifinals of Amherst vs. Lew-Port at 7 and Cheektowaga vs. Maryvale at 8:30 p.m. News Reporter Mary Jo Monnin is on hand for those.

Down at Jamestown Community College, the Class D semifinals will take place while the girls tournament continues with A-2, B-2 and C-2 semifinal action.

As always, we'll certainly be looking forward to your #PrepTalkLive updates from these contests via Twitter.

Our scoreboard page has a full schedule of tonight's games -- that same page will have box scores as games are reported to us throughout the evening.

Keep track of the action and contribute to it as well in the blog below -- the easiest way to do that is to tweet updates with the #PrepTalkLive hashtag.

We set up blogs like this throughout the winter, especially on busy nights -- we'll monitor games via not only our tweets, but those of high school sports fans and followers who use the #preptalklive hashtag.

We want tweets from all varsity sports, every season, every day of the week. The #preptalklive blog (and hashtag) -- as it was during football season -- is the place to check out scores from all over Western New York.

Canisius coach Kyle Husband on the loss:

"That team we just lost to, one, played very well together, and played very hard. Unfortunately, they came out today … and they played harder than we did -- which I always think is one of our better attributes -- and they played more together than we did.

"In any sport, obviously people are not going to lay down and let you win. And I think a little bit of that crept in. We played back on our heels until it was too late.

"They made more plays than we did throughout the entire game. They made bigger shots than we did, they made better passes than we did, they certainly rebounded the ball better than we did, and they probably defended at a higher level."

I asked Husband about it seemed like it was 'one of those nights' early on:

"Whether it was a bounce that went right into their hands, or missed free throws, missed layups, 2 for 18 from three … it was definiltey one of those nights. But when you don’t play as hard as the other team, that’s what happens.

"It’s certainly not an excuse because we didn’t make shots. In the Timon game, I said we made shots because we passed the ball at a high level, because we had better energy … we didn’t do that today as a team.

"And after this many months, and after as many good wins that we’ve had, obviously the disappointment is pretty high."

#PrepTalkLive from Quarterfinal Friday (with VIDEO interviews with Williamsville North)

By Keith McShea

Happy Quarterfinal Friday.

It's one of the biggest -- and busiest -- days on the high school sports calendar as 32 boys basketball games determine the Section VI final four participants in eight classes. Here's a rundown of what's in store tonight from my Prep Talk column Wednesday. You can also watch News pollster Chad Andrews and I discuss the playoff brackets on PrepTalkTV.

I'm headed to Williamsville North to see the No. 3 large school Spartans take on Niagara Falls in Class AA.

We'll certainly be looking forward to your #PrepTalkLive updates from these games via Twitter. Reliable tweeters (like @centercourt42) will be at Kenmore West for the game with Lockport and I know many others will be at all the other games.

Our scoreboard page has a schedule of today's games -- that same page will have box scores as games are reported to us throughout the evening.

How The News voted: Ahh, the postseason is here

By Keith McShea

Every week during the basketball season a panel of voters participates in The News' large and small school boys basketball polls, which are published in today's Scholastic Spotlight.

And every week we let you know, like the title says ... how The News voted. This is just one ballot -- there are nine other voters in each poll.

Here are our previous blogs: last week (Feb. 11), Feb. 4Jan. 28Jan. 21, Jan. 14, Jan. 7; and our first ballot (there was no blog after the second poll as I was on vacation). Here's last year's final poll

And -- as we head into the postseason (today for Section VI, Saturday for Manhattan Cup) -- here's this week's ballot:
