Prep Talk Girls Three-Sport Player of the Year: McKyla Brooks, Frontier

By Keith McShea

2BrooksOne of the best volleyball players in Western New York, and a multiple champion in track & field -- with some history thrown in.

That's the resume of McKyla Brooks of Frontier. Her excellence during all three seasons led to her selection as the Prep Talk Girls Three-Sport Player of the Year.

Brooks was a first-team All-Western New York selection in volleyball as an overwhelmingly dominant force at the net.

In indoor track, she won championships in the long jump and triple jump. In the outdoor season she won championships in the same events, including setting a Section VI record in the triple jump.

Brooks, a junior, has already verbally committed to Stony Brook, which recruited her to participate in both sports.

She talked about her award, season and future plans in a recent visit to PrepTalkTV

#PrepTalkLive from the Section VI girls lacrosse finals: Lancaster, Hamburg repeat in tough ones; Lake Shore knocks off Amherst

By Keith McShea

Hello from one of my favorite days after one of my other favorite days on the high school sports calendar, the Section VI championship tripleheader at All High Stadium in girls lacrosse (boys lacrosse was yesterday).

I'll have updates throughout the day in the live blog below, while I'll also have end-of-quarter #PrepTalkLive updates on Twitter. We start with the Class B final of Hamburg and Williamsville North at 3:30, followed by the Class C final between Amherst and Lake Shore at 5 and the Class A annual showdown of Frontier and Lancaster playing at 8.

As always, we're looking forward to your #PrepTalkLive updates on another important day in Western New York high school sports. The Section VI quarterfinals in both baseball and softball were played yesterday, but some were postponed to today.

Contribute updates and keep track of others as well in the blog -- the easiest way to do that is to tweet updates with the #PrepTalkLive hashtag. Those tweets will automatically appear below.

We want tweets from all varsity sports every day of the week. The #preptalklive blog (and hashtag) -- as it was during football season and the winter -- is the place to check out scores from all over Western New York.

Prep Talk Player of the Year for boys bowling: Chad Mee, Frontier

By Keith McShea

MeeIn boys bowling, the award could have been called the Player of the Years.

Chad Mee of Frontier has been synonymous with excellence in bowling going back to his eighth-grade year, when he won the Section VI individual title, all the way through his senior year, when he ... won the Section VI individual title.

Every year, Mee made the state tournament, either by virtute of making the Section VI team or helping lead Frontier to the state championships.

The last two years, he helped Frontier advance as a team, and this year the Falcons won the school’s first state title with a dominating performance at Babylon Lanes on Long Island. Mee was the top individual in the state team competition with a 1,346 pinfall for a 224.33 average. Mee was also the individual champion as Frontier won Section VI after an unbeaten ECIC I championship year.

Mee's teams did not lose a league match since his eighth-grade season.

Away from high school competition, he has won several adult tournaments. Last year, he finished at the Obenauer Masters Tournament.

He received Division I partial scholarship offers but bypassed those and will attend the University at Buffalo to study chemical engineering. He hopes to start a bowling club team at UB, which does not have a bowling program.

PrepTalkTV: Prep Talk Players of the Year in soccer, Gus Macker move, the spring & more

By Keith McShea

Tonight's PrepTalkTV episode ties in with today's kickoff of the Countdown to the Prep Talk Awards as we welcomed in today's spotlight Prep Talk Player of the Year -- along with tomorrow's.

Boys soccer Prep Talk Player of the Year Brandon Galanti of Frontier, who was featured on the blog today, appeared on the show with girls soccer Prep Talk Player of the Year Carissima Cutrona of Williamsville South. Cutrona will be Friday's spotlighted player on the blog as we countdown to the inaugural Prep Talk Awards on June 16.

In our second segment of our first episode of the spring, colleague Miguel Rodriguez joined me to talk about the move of the Gus Macker 3-on-3 basketball tournament from downtown Buffalo to Darien Lake amusement park. We also talked about the season's first Power 10, looked back at the winter's top team and more.

Prep Talk Player of the Year for boys soccer: Brandon Galanti, Frontier

By Keith McShea

Brandon Galanti, FrontierSoccer coaches voted Brandon Galanti of Frontier an All-Western New York first teamer, the ECIC Player of the Year and the Western New York Player of the Year.

So he was a straightforward choice as the Prep Talk Player of the Year for boys soccer.

Galanti, a speedy forward who scored 21 goals for the Falcons, will play at Niagara University this fall.

Galanti scored one of his goals in overtime to defeat Jamestown. He had two goals in a 3-0 Senior Night victory over West Seneca West.

He will be honored at the inaugural Prep Talk Awards on June 16 at the Hyatt Regency Buffalo, featuring Pro Football Hall of Famer Andre Reed and Janet Snyder of Kiss 98.5. The Prep Talk Awards will honor Prep Talk Players of the Year in more than 30 sports, along with the All-Western New York first teams in football and basketball.

The Countdown to the Prep Talk Awards will feature a different Prep Talk Player of the Year each day until the June 16 event.

Galanti will be featured on tonight's episode of PrepTalkTV along with the Prep Talk Player of the Year for girls soccer, which will be revealed during the show.

Section VI football Media Day at The Ralph: AA & A interviews

By Keith McShea

If it is Tuesday before the Section VI football championship games at The Ralph, that means it is Media Day at The Ralph.

I spent my time talking with the Class AA & A coaches, largely because it features two significant underdogs (who have succeeded in that role already in Frontier and Williamsville North) against two significant favorites: No. 1 large school Jamestown in AA and No. 3 Sweet Home in A.

Here's what they had to say Tuesday afternoon.

Please excuse the wind-disturbed audio (and the leaf-blowers in the background -- The Ralph was getting spruced up at the time):

The finals will be the subject of my Prep Talk column on Thursday.

Mary Jo Monnin broke down all six games and has some terrific info as part of today's Scholastic Spotlight

We'll also have gameday capsules later this week.

Week Three Saturday with #PrepTalkLive: Frontier rolls to shutout at Lockport (with VIDEO); St. Mary's beats Timon; Canisius wins

By Keith McShea

Week Three Saturday is highlighted by a Class AA clash of Frontier up at Lockport. Both teams are 2-0 and are ranked in the large school top 10. I'll have play-by-play along with scoring and end-of-quarter updates via Twitter (with the hashtag #FROvLOCK).

Two other games I'll be keeping an eye out for on are St. Mary's hosting Bishop Timon-St. Jude at 1 p.m. and Canisius hosting Walsh Jesuit of Ohio at 2.

We encourage you to tweet updates with the hashtag #preptalklive attached -- that's the quickest way for us to share the information through the live chat (tweets with that hashtag will automatically show up -- our old friend #preptalkscores will work as well).

Our high school scoreboard page will have the final scores and details as soon as they are reported to us.

We'll be back next week with more #PrepTalkLive coverage.
