PrepTalkTV: Cheektowaga wrestling standout Rodriguez-Spencer & an old friend co-hosts

By Keith McShea

Cheektowaga senior wrestler Renaldo Rodriguez-Spencer, an All-American and state champion who is headed to Iowa State, will join us on PrepTalkTV tonight along with his coach Matt Haberl, and a special guest co-host appearance by former News reporter Lauren Burroughs (you'll remember her last name as Mariacher in her PrepTalkTV days). We'll get started at 7:30.

You can watch the show live here or at the BuffaloNews.com home page. After the show the complete broadcast segments will be posted here.

The live show will be again be followed shortly thereafter by a live chat in which we'll monitor tonight's action -- including the 9 p.m. Federation hockey game between Williamsville North and St. Joe's -- through the #PrepTalkLive hashtag on Twitter. As always, we'll discuss anything in the world of high school sports -- or our coverage of it.

Please be patient in the chat. I promise I'll get to all questions.

PrepTalkRewind: Park's Fred Foster & one of the best dunks I've ever seen (with VIDEO)

By Keith McShea

On Friday night, in the fourth quarter of what would be a 77-75 win for Park over visiting Nichols, I saw one of the best high school dunks I've ever seen.

This is how I saw it.  I stand by my use of ALL CAPS. :-)

Later in the live blog I said that it might have been the greatest I've ever seen. It's on the short list.

One by Jamestown's Jaysean Paige certainly came to mind, especially Monday after he verballed to Southern Miss; there's Jonny Flynn's putback dunk for Niagara Falls against Fairport in the regionals at Buffalo State, there were a handful by Paul Harris of the Falls (watch a bunch here or a bunch more here). This season, Donte Williams of Bishop Timon-St. Jude had a great one in the first game I saw this year) while Stafford Trueheart has had some fine finishes of alley-oops for Canisius.

The thing that made it such an impressive dunk was that most times -- especially in high school games -- your big dunks are coming on fast breaks or at least with a running start. This one just exploded in what seemed to be a couple of steps after Foster got the ball in the lane.

My jaw dropped and it stayed that way for a couple of possessions up and down the floor.

To back up this highlight-worthy play, Foster had about five more big plays in the final minutes for Park, including a slick go-ahead basket in the lane and two steals to stymie any potential answers from Nichols (Check lower down below for my own iPhone videos of the end of the game).

I tweeted after they game that I'd love to see video of the dunk, and here are two:

By Keith McShea

Canisius basketball players Howard Washington, Ryan Richards and LaTerrance Reed will be our guests on the final PrepTalkTV episode of 2013. The show is tonight at 7:30 and can be watched right here.

Canisius was supposed to be on last week's show, but we had to cancel due to snowstorm.

The final live chat of the calendar year will follow at about 8:15, as we'll discuss anything in the world of high school sports while keeping an eye on basketball and hockey action via #PrepTalkLive.

Please be patient in the chat. I promise I'll get to all questions.

#PrepTalkLive Tuesday hoops: Will North beats Jamestown in final seconds; Ken West tops Lockport (with VIDEO)

By Keith McShea

It's another busy night in high school basketball full of some big early-season games: Jamestown visits Williamsville North and Clarence is at Frontier in ECIC I; Lockport is at Kenmore West in an early Niagara Frontier League showdown; in the Monsignor Martin Association, Canisius heads to a Park team that started well while Bishop Timon-St. Jude hosts St. Mary's in a matchup that has been a very good one in recent years, while Fredonia visits Lackawanna in a very nice small-school nonleaguer.

Check out links to today's boys basketball coverage before heading out to the games.

I think I'll be starting at Kenmore West before heading up to Will North.

We will set up blogs like this throughout the winter, especially on big, busy nights -- we'll monitor games via not only our tweets, but those of high school sports fans and followers who use the #preptalklive hashtag. Last week we did it Tuesday and Friday. And while tonight is a busy basketball night, we want tweets from all varsity sports.

Much of it starts with you high school fans out there. Tweet updates and observations with the hashtag #preptalklive, and those will appear instantly in the blog below, making the #preptalklive blog -- as it was during football season -- the place to check out scores from all over Western New York.

Our scoreboard page has a schedule of today's games and will have box scores as games are reported to us.

Video highlights from my evening.

Lockport's last possession, down three at Kenmore West:

Then from Williamsville North's 61-60 victory over Jamestown, North's final possession, on which Maceo Jack's three-pointer put them ahead:

If you missed Bishop Timon-St. Jude's 66-64 overtime win over Williamsville North last Saturday, here are some pretty great highlights.

Here's my story on the game and here's the live blog from Saturday night. My bad (chest tap) on these not being posted earlier, but there just wasn't enough time in the day.

Note: The iphone camera-man makes no apologies for his commentary, which mostly sounded like this: "OHHHHHHHHHHHH!"
