Photojournalist Harry Scull Jr. continued our #preptalkpreseason coverage with a visit to Depew to talk to coach Brian Wilson and his players. The Wildcats discussed the 2013 season and their status heading into Scrimmage Saturday.
Meanwhile, Mark Mulville checked in with Orchard Park and fellow photojournalist John Hickey visited Burgard's practice at All High Stadium.
Mary Jo Monnin and John Hickey were at East Aurora for the kickoff of the #preptalkpreseason. EA has welcomed players from Holland this year, part of a trend of programs combining throughout Western New York and throughout the state. Holland has not had a football program.
Mary Jo will have more in a story for Tuesday's News.
Welcome to the first day of the 2013-14 high school sports season. Today is the first day that fall season teams can practice throughout the state. For football teams, which have held workouts and passing leagues throughout the summer, the preparation begins today for Week One (Sept. 6-7).
At Canisius, a most notable transfer will not be on the field today. TJ Wheatley, the junior standout who I wrote about in Sunday's paper, is out with what the coaching staff is calling -- get ready hockey fans -- an "upper body injury." The team says it has not been authorized by Wheatley's family to disclose the specific injury.
Wheatley is listed as day-to-day. The team is hopeful it will have him in the opening-night lineup at Rochester's McQuaid on Friday, Sept. 6.
Wheatley participated in passing leagues with Canisius this summer. Once the injury was diagnosed it was determined that it occurred back at the Sound Mind/Sound Body camp in Michigan in June, which was prior to the Wheatleys' decision to attend Canisius.
I'm at Brockport State for the Class AA, A and B softball games. The C and D games are at Olean. The baseball games are at Niagara Falls (AA), Batavia (A & D) and Jamestown (B & C). We will have reporters providing updates from all baseball games.
If you are at one of today's big games on the diamonds, be sure to tweet updates with the hashtag #preptalkscores. Those tweets will automatically appear in the live blog below.
St. Joe's lacrosse recorded a tremendous victory today.
But there is a tremendous amount of controversy about the finish.
St. Joe's beat longtime Monsignor Martin power Bishop Timon-St. Jude, 13-12, in two overtime Monday afternoon at St. Joe's. The loss ended 49-game win streak for Timon in Monsignor Martin regular season games. The Tigers' last loss was to St. Francis on May 19, 2007.
Junior James Bassett scored 59 seconds into the second overtime after Timon thought it had won the game.
I watched the live video feed via sjci.com. It's available here; the archived broadcast is not available yet but should be within the next 24 hours. I could not tell whether or not Timon's goal was actually a goal. Here's what I saw:
