Katrina Buczkowski's PERFECT GAME (with VIDEO of final out) pushes Clarence to softball final four with Will South, Eden

By Keith McShea

SANBORN -- It was the perfect way to finish off a perfect day for Section VI softball at Niagara-Wheatfield.

Section VI went 3-0 against its counterparts from Section V (Rochester area) on Friday, with the most impressive performance coming in the finale of the Far West Regional tripleheader.

Clarence senior Katrina Buczkowski threw her first career no-hitter to lead the Red Devils to a 5-0 victory over Brockport in the Class AA game.

Buczkowski struck out 13 and did not allow a ball to leave the infield. She also added a key RBI single during the Red Devils' five-run fifth against Brockport senior Julia DiMartino, who this week was named the Gatorade New York State Player of the Year for softball and who beat Clarence in last year's regional.

Clarence will be joined by Williamsville South and Eden at next Saturday's New York State Public High School Athletic Association championships at Moreau Recreational Park in South Glens Falls.

VIDEO: Williamsville South softball walks off with Section VI Class A title

By Keith McShea

Here's the shot heard 'round Western New York softball Wednesday evening.

Williamsville South, trailing 4-0 with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, came back to beat Starpoint, 6-4, with a rally that was fantastically finished off by senior Brianna Clark's three-run walkoff homer.

Here it is:

Behind-the-scenes: After Starpoint got two outs in the bottom of the seventh, I moved from my scorer's table spot, where I was live blogging, to the other side of the backstop so I could get iPhone video of what I thought would be a celebration by the Spartans following the final out. I went on that side so that I'd have a better shot of players streaming out of the dugout.

Well, that final out never happened. What an amazing finish to a championship game. I love my job.

Prep Talk Player of the Year for boys indoor track: Devon Patterson, Williamsville South

By Keith McShea

John Hickey/Buffalo NewsThe name Devon Patterson doesn't just mean success in Western New York.

There are plenty of people nation-wide who know the name of the Williamsville South junior, who is the Prep Talk Player of the Year for boys indoor track.

Patterson, who will attend the University at Buffalo next year, was considered one of the best throwers of the shot put in the nation all indoor track season.

The Section VI champion and record holder finished third at the state meet (62 feet, 9-3/4 inches) and then went on to take second with a throw of 63 feet, 3-1/2 inches at the national New Balance Indoor Track High School Championships, earning All-American status (top six).

That followed an outstanding junior year in which his throw of 59 feet, 4-3/4 inches put him sixth at the New Balance nationals following a state championship and Section VI crown.

He has continued to put up big numbers during the spring season, setting the ECIC championships record in the shot (63-7) this past weekend, one week after establishing a record at the prestigious Carl Roesch meet (63 feet, 3-3/4).
