Buffalo Bills coach Chan Gailey has warned the media and fans who scrutinize every morsel of offseason coverage:
Don't pay attention to which players are lining up with which units.
"There are no groupings right now to be honest with you," Gailey said Monday afternoon in response to a question about the offensive line. "We're putting guys out there and letting them play and seeing who can do what. If somebody has a bad day, we'll put somebody else in there. If somebody else has a great day, we'll make sure he'll get more reps tomorrow.
"I said it last week when we were talking about Derek Hagan: Don't put any stock into first group, second group or third group right now. We're just trying to get guys reps and evaluate who can do what."
This is Gailey's third offseason with the Bills and his third different kind of discovery phase for the team he's about to field.
His first offseason was so peculiar that he gave Trent Edwards all of the starting repetitions throughout OTAs, minicamp, training camp and preseason before the Bills dumped him for Ryan Fitzpatrick in Week 3.
Gailey's second offseason was erased by last year's lockout.
His third offseason is his most grounded, but it's also the first under the new collective bargaining agreement, which reduced the number of workouts and altered the rules on contact.
Gailey said he would put together a depth chart and stick to it right before training camp.
I asked if he has a depth chart hanging on his office wall right now.
"Sure, I do," Gailey said. "But nothing's set. I mean, they're all up there, but it's all magnets. They can be moved."
