Quick trivia question: Who rushed for more career touchdowns, Cookie Gilchrist or Jack Kemp?
As you might guess from the question, the answer is the quarterback, not the famed running back. Kemp, in fact, rushed for 40 career touchdowns, the third best total of any quarterback in NFL history. Gilchrist rushed for 37 (not counting, of course, his scores in the Canadian league). Otto Graham holds the career QB lead at 44. Steve Young had 43. Then Kemp. ... Michael Vick has 33 so far in his career. This is an indication of the great athleticism Kemp brought to the position.
There's a fine video on Kemp's career that was posted Friday on the NFL Films blog. It's 4 minutes, 17 seconds and well worth the time. See: http://nflfilms.nfl.com/
Kemp's 40 TDs are second in AFL history for any player, behind Abner Haynes' 46. Kemp holds the AFL records for most pass attempts (3,055), completions (1,428), yards (21,130). He also threw the second most interceptions, 181 (behind only George Blanda's 195). He also holds the AFL record for most fumbles, 77. Haynes and Len Dawson are tied at a distant second with 52.
