Nix not dodging WNY expectations for 2012

By Mark Gaughan

Bills General Manager Buddy Nix didn't mince words today in discussing high expectations fans in Western New York have for his team this season.

"Obviously the offseason acquisitions helped, but I still think it was time for us ... If we had not gotten Mario (Williams) and Mark (Anderson), it would have still been time to start winning some games," Nix said at St. John Fisher College this afternoon.

"We've done some things right," Nix said. "I think we've probably made some mistakes along the way. But it's time to close it out and win some games. Until we do, it's not complete."

The Bills began reporting to training camp today. They will undergo conditioning testing on Wednesday and have their first camp practice on Thursday.

Nix said it's obvious the team has improved its overall depth.

"I think we're realistic enough to know the first year or two we didn't have enough depth and enough playmakers to make a difference and probably contend all the way through the year," he said. "But I think the feeling is different now. I think we do.

"There's a lot of extenuating circumstances, the reasons we had the skid we had last year. But without making any excuses, we've got to make sure that don't happen again. The first year [2010] we go on an eight-game losing streak. The second year we go on a seven-game losing streak. You can't let that happen. In the locker room somebody's got to step up and put a stop to it."
