Buffalo Bills defensive tackle Marcell Dareus knows the pain Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Torrey Smith is going through all too well.
It was just 16 days ago that Dareus' 19-year-old brother, Simeon Gilmore, was killed in Alabama. So when the news came out Sunday that Smith had lost his brother, Tevin Jones, also 19, in a motorcycle accident in Maryland, Dareus reached out to offer his condolences.
"I gave him my wishes and blessings," Dareus said. "He texted me about my loss and two weeks later I’m texting him about his. I just told him I’m so sorry, man, I know what you’re going through and just keep you head up.
"It’s tough out there, but I’m here for him."
When Dareus was introduced prior to the home opener, he was met with a thunderous ovation. That support, he said, has helped him in his time of grief.
"The team and the fans, they've have all been great support," he said.
Smith played Sunday for the Ravens, leading the team with seven catches for 126 yards and two touchdowns in a win over New England.
