EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Quick highlights from the Buffalo Bills' 48-28 buzz kill to the New York Jets at the Meadowlands. The Jets set a club record for most points on opening day.
What it means: The Bills have lost six straight to the Jets and already are in a 0-1 hole in the AFC East standings. The New England Patriots and Jets are 1-0.
Star of the game: Mark Sanchez kept the Big Apple pressure at arm's length for at least another week. He riddled the Bills' defense with 19 completions on 27 throws for 266 yards and three touchdowns.
Impressive stat line of the game: Bills running back C.J. Spiller filled in admirably for the injured Fred Jackson. Spiller ran 14 times for 169 yards and a touchdown. He had a career-long 56-yard touchdown in the second quarter and added a 49-yard run in the third quarter to set up Buffalo's next TD.
Terrible stat line of the game: Bills quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick's overall numbers look better than his performance because he completed a lot of passes in garbage time. He had thrown three interceptions by the third play of the second half. Fitzpatrick's third interception was a pick-six to Antonio Cromartie that give the Jets a 34-7 lead.
Defensive woes persist: The Bills' defense didn't look overhauled. The Bills generated an insufficient pass rush. First-round draft pick Stephon Gilmore was beaten for a touchdown. The Bills recorded zero sacks.
Play of the day: Spiller charged through a small crack off guard and made some Jets defenders miss on his way to a career-long 56-yard touchdown run in the second quarter to make the score 21-7.
Preliminary injury report: Jackson left the game with a right knee injury in the second quarter and did not return. He's believed to have suffered a sprain, but his status is uncertain until he has an MRI Monday. ... Bills receiver David Nelson left the game early in the fourth quarter with a right knee injury and didn't return.
Coming up: The Bills home opener is next Sunday against the Kansas City Chiefs at Ralph Wilson Stadium. The Chiefs lost to the Atlanta Falcons, 40-24, today.
