Brad Smith has thrown two passes in his Buffalo Bills career. Both have gone for interceptions.
The last of those, which came Sunday in the fourth quarter of Buffalo's 19-16 win over the Arizona Cardinals, has been written and talked about a lot this week, with coach Chan Gailey explaining the call and fans railing against it.
Here's what Smith had to say about the play:
"We were expecting a certain look. We kind of got it a little bit, but it was a little bit different," Smith said. "The guy [Patrick Peterson] made a good play. If he didn’t fall off the outside receiver, we wouldn't be having this conversation.
We were expecting cover zero [man-to-man coverage, with no deep safety help], and I kind of lay it up over the top. The guy [Peterson] fell off the outside [receiver] and made a play on the ball."
Smith said the play called out of the Wildcat formation was pass all the way, with no run option.
"It doesn’t always work out the way you wanted it to," he said. "You take each play, good or bad, and move on from it. I look at every play like that. I want to make the proper play, make the proper read, make the proper throw. The guy just made a good play."
