Marv Levy is no pessimist.
That even pertains to the Buffalo Bills right after they let an opponent gain 580 yards.
Levy isn't ready to write off the Bills after watching their abysmal afternoon against the New England Patriots. Levy recalled the game in September 1992, when his Bills gave up a team-record 598 yards to the San Francisco 49ers in the "No Punt Game."
"Maybe they can bounce back and have a successful year," the Hall of Fame coach said of this year's Bills. "We went to the Super Bowl in '92. That was a crazy year."
The Bills, however, somehow defeated the 49ers that day in Candlestick Park. The Bills, laden with superstar talent, opened the season 4-0 and allowed seven, zero and seven points in the other three victories.
The current Bills, who will visit Candlestick Park for their next game, are 2-2 and have allowed 100 points and committed 10 turnovers in their two losses.
In Sunday's flop, Tom Brady was borderline unstoppable. Stevan Ridley and Brandon Bolden combined for 243 rushing yards and three touchdowns. Rob Gronkowski and Wes Welker combined for 133 receiving yards.
"I still think the Bills have promise for this season," Levy said. "I've seen some good signs.
"I would've thought their defense would be playing better than it has. Brady was hot, no question. Two guys that rush for over 100 yards and two guys that receive for over 100, wow! How many total yards did they have?"
The Patriots had 580 yards, Levy was reminded.
"Oh, boy," he muttered. "Oh, my gosh."
Maybe Levy can't help but be a slight pessimist sometimes.
