Kyle Williams is one of the Buffalo Bills' defensive captains. He's an inspirational player and can deliver a stirring comment.
With reporters at his locker this morning, Williams had some strong words about the state of the Bills and what players -- particularly the young ones -- must do from here.
"It's all about a standard for yourself," Williams said about whether there's accountability. "What do you want to be viewed as? If you're out here playing for money and so everybody knows your name, then you're probably not going to make it long.
"I was talking to [defensive coordinator Dave] Wannstedt the other day about Russ Grimm's Hall of Fame speech. He said the greatest joy was taking a man from Point A to Point B against his will, and if that's not what you're getting your kicks out of playing this game, you're not going to last long and you're probably not going to enjoy it."
Williams, a Pro Bowler in 2010, is having a nice bounce-back season after Achilles surgery last year. He and Mario Williams are tied for the team lead with 4.5 sacks. Kyle Williams has 33 tackles, a team-high seven for losses, and two passes defensed.
Overall, however, the Bills have been deplorable. They rank 31st in total defense, 31st in rushing defense and 24th in passing defense.
Williams took no solace from yielding better stats in Sunday's 21-9 loss to the Houston Texans.
"It's not good enough," Williams said. "I don't know how you justify something's better when you lose. It's obviously not good enough when you lose, no matter how many yards you give up, no matter how you play as an individual.
"That being said, yeah, fewer yards maybe, whatever. But there's still plays here and there that are complete, like, 'This job should've been taken care of. We should've played that better.' And you're talking about wiping out a good bit of yardage.
"Those are things we have to continue to harp on about doing your job and playing fast."
If his teammates could walk his talk, then the playoffs might not look so implausible.
