Buddy Nix: 'Time is now' for Bills to trade up and draft a QB

By Tim Graham

Buddy Nix's weekly dance with the topic of drafting a quarterback continued this morning on WGR's "The Howard Simon Show."

Right on schedule, the Buffalo Bills' general manager delivered comments to get fans thinking even more about April.

Last month, Nix sounded resolute in saying the Bills would draft a franchise quarterback in April. Over the next few shows, Nix soft-pedaled the idea by saying they would draft a quarterback only if there was one worth taking.

Today, Nix -- unsolicited, mind you -- said the Bills want to trade up to draft a quarterback. Nix repeatedly has emphasized he doesn't like to trade up in the draft because a team on the make needs all the picks it can muster.

"Let me say this: I think there's a time that in the era that you're in and the development of your team, there's a time when you can move up a round to take a quarterback," Nix said. "And I think the time's now for us.

"I mean, if a guy's there -- I keep saying that, and there'll be one out there -- if the guy's there, then I think we'll target -- as I've said before -- drafting a good quarterback. We need a good, young quarterback, and we're going to do our best to get him."

The idea of trading up wasn't explored any further during the interview, but moving up a round would seem to indicate trading out of the second or third round and back into the first or second rounds.

Nix said last week that if a team has targeted a quarterback it wants, then it should be prepared to draft him a round earlier than his grade to make sure another club doesn't get him first.
