Starting tight end Scott Chandler suffered a torn anterior-cruciate ligament in his left knee in the first quarter of Sunday's loss to Miami, coach Chan Gailey confirmed today.
"It's bad. He'll have to have surgery," Gailey said.
The injury puts Chandler's availability for the beginning of the 2013 season in jeopardy.
H-back Dorin Dickerson, who replaced Chandler in the lineup Sunday, was carted off the field with an ankle injury in the fourth quarter, but Gailey had a more favorable report on him.
"Not as bad as we thought, which was good. All the X-rays and everything were negative," Gailey said. "He may even make a little bit of practice Wednesday."
Gailey said Dickerson is expected to play in Sunday's season finale at Ralph Wilson Stadium against the New York Jets, but that the team is considering whether it will have to add another tight end between then and now. The only true tight end on the roster, Lee Smith, is primarily a blocker.
"We're looking at all the different things we might have to do between now and Wednesday," Gailey said.
Safety Da'Norris Searcy also suffered a groin injury against the Dolphins and will miss the season finale against the Jets, Gailey said.
