Doug Marrone reportedly locks up Mike Pettine as D coordinator

By Tim Graham

New Buffalo Bills coach Doug Marrone has worked fast to hire his coordinators.

Within 45 hours of being named Bills head coach, Marrone hired offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett and, according to ESPN's Chris Mortensen, defensive coordinator Mike Pettine.

Pettine has been New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan's defensive capo the past four years.

Ryan on Tuesday said he didn't want to face Pettine twice a year in the AFC East.

"I hope he doesn't take that job," Ryan said. "I hope he goes somewhere else. ... We had the conversations, and Mike thinks it's best that he go to a different team as defensive coordinator, and I wish him all the best unless he goes to Buffalo."

The Jets' defense ranked first, third, fifth and eighth in yards allowed over the past four seasons.

The Buffalo News reported Tuesday night Hackett was leaving Syracuse for the Bills.

Hackett, the son of former USC Trojans and Pitt Panthers head coach Paul Hackett, was Syracuse's offensive coordinator the past two years under Marrone.

In 2012, Syracuse ranked third in the Big East in scoring offense at 30 points a game and first in yards at 476 a game. It ranked third in rushing offense, second in passing offense, second in third-down efficiency and third in sacks allowed.
