New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan doesn't want to go up against Mike Pettine twice a year in the AFC East.
Ryan already is begging Pettine not to take the Buffalo Bills' defensive coordinator job if offered.
"I hope he doesn't take that job," Ryan said. "I hope he goes somewhere else."
At this morning's end-of-the-season news conference in Florham Park, N.J., Ryan said Pettine will interview with the Bills today. Pettine declined an offer to re-sign with the Jets last month.
"Mike and I have been together for over 10 years," Ryan said before taking a question from the assembled media horde. "He's a tremendous coach.
"We had the conversations, and Mike thinks it's best that he go to a different team as defensive coordinator, and I wish him all the best unless he goes to Buffalo.
"But I love Mike, and I respect him."
