Syracuse alum Tom Coughlin sad to see Doug Marrone go

By Jay Skurski

INDIANAPOLIS -- New York Giants coach Tom Coughlin is a Syracuse Orange from way back. The Super Bowl-winning coach played halfback for the Orange in the 1960s, and has been a supporter of the program ever since.

So Coughlin was disappointed when the Buffalo Bills picked Doug Marrone to be their new head coach.

"Doug is a good coach. We've watched him closely when he was at Syracuse. He used to visit me in the offseason. He's very serious, very smart," Coughlin said during his meeting with the media inside Lucas Oil Stadium. "Syracuse is going to miss Doug Marrone, no doubt. ... I had read that he had interviewed a couple places, but I saw Doug [Thursday] and wished him well again. I sent a little note to him, he texts me and I text him back. I saw him [Thursday] and wished him well and he put his staff together fast and he's hit the floor running, without a doubt."

In today's print edition, I looked at some of the positive buzz Marrone's hire has generated in league circles.

By the way, Coughlin's upstate ties didn't stop after his playing career. His first job as a head coach was at RIT, and he later returned to the Orange as a quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator.
