Agent tells AP Bills trying to re-sign Leodis McKelvin

By Tim Graham

Two weeks ago at the NFL scouting combine, Buffalo Bills General Manager Buddy Nix said re-signing cornerback Leodis McKelvin was among their top priorities.

With five days until the start of free agency, the Bills apparently are following through with an attempt.

McKelvin's agent, Hadley Engelhard, told Associated Press reporter John Wawrow the parties are scheduled to speak Friday about a contract extension.

The free-agency signing period opens at 4 p.m. Tuesday. But under new guidelines, other teams are allowed to contact agents and open negotiations with free agents at midnight on Saturday morning.

Once that happens, Englehard will have a better idea of what the market for McKelvin is.

"Things will pick up on Saturday," Englehard told Wawrow, "but I don't rule anything out until a deal is done."

McKelvin, the 11th overall pick in the 2008 draft, has been dazzling on returns but a disappointment at cornerback.

He was one of the NFL's best return men last season. He averaged 18.7 yards on punt returns and scored two touchdowns. He averaged 28.3 yards on kickoff returns.

On defense, McKelvin started four games at cornerback after Aaron Williams went down with an injury. McKelvin made 20 tackles. He had one interception and three pass breakups.
