Bills visiting QB Landry Jones

By Mark Gaughan

Oklahoma quarterback Landry Jones is holding a private workout today for the Buffalo Bills. Jones is the latest QB on the Bills' scouting road trips. The Bills last week worked out West Virginia University's Geno Smith and Florida State University's E.J. Manuel.

Jones, 6-foot-4 and 225 pounds, was a four-year starter for the Sooners and compiled a 39-11 record. He's considered a third or fourth-round prospect for the NFL Draft. Jones had 123 touchdown passes and 52 interceptions for his career. He ranks third in NCAA history in completions, attempts and passing yards.

Each NFL team is allowed to bring 30 draft prospects to its headquarters for visits. Those visits do not include on-field workouts. Private workouts that are held on-campus or in a prospect's hometown are not included in the 30-visit limit.

Fred Davis looms as Bills TE option

By Mark Gaughan

Washington Redskins free agent Fred Davis is the best option left on the free agent market at the tight end position, and the Buffalo Bills are interested in the five-year veteran. Bills officials met with him Saturday, a league source confirmed. ESPN reported the interest earlier today.

Davis, 27, is recovering from a torn Achilles tendon, suffered on Oct. 21, in Week Seven of last season. He is an athletic tight end with a big frame and good hands. He emerged as one of the quality players at the position in 2011, when he caught 59 passes for 796 yards in the first 12 games. Then he was suspended for the final four games of the season for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy.

Davis, a former second-round pick, was off to a pretty good start last season, with 24 catches, before suffering the Achilles injury early in a game against the New York Giants.

E.J. Manuel next stop on Bills' trip

By Mark Gaughan

The Buffalo Bills are continuing their workout tour today, visiting Tallahassee, Fla., to conduct a private practice session with Florida State quarterback E.J. Manuel.

Manuel has ideal size for the position, at 6-foot-5 and 237 pounds. He has a strong arm and has the athleticism to make plays on the move. Florida State went 12-2 on the strength of a defense that ranked No. 2 in the country, behind only national champion Alabama. The Seminoles' offense had plenty of chances to fail during games. Manuel compiled a 25-6 career record as a starter, the third most wins in Florida State history. He was the QB in four straight bowl-game wins. The only other QB in FBS history to do that was West Virginia's Pat White. Manuel has potential. But his play on the field did not suggest he's ready to be a franchise quarterback. His pocket presence and timing was not nearly as good as some of the other top quarterbacks in the 2013 draft class.

Doug Marrone wants to know what a franchise QB is

By Tim Graham

New Buffalo Bills coach Doug Marrone's ability to avoid answering a question like Fran Tarkenton on a desperation scramble is becoming fodder for national media outlets.

It turns out Sports Illustrated writer Don Banks was the one who asked Marrone at the NFL owners meetings about the Bills' decision to cut Ryan Fitzpatrick, eliciting a response that would make Sergeant Schultz proud.

Banks recounted his interaction with Marrone at the NFL owners meetings. Their Q&A included Marrone admitting he didn't know the Bills have missed the playoffs 13 straight seasons and haggling over the definition of what a franchise quarterback is.

Fred Jackson eager for Bills signings, yet willing to be patient

By Tim Graham

How Fred Jackson is like most Buffalo Bills fans: He wants them to sign some players, too.

How Jackson is unlike most Bills fans: He's not frustrated by the team's lack of recent activity.

Jackson is aware there are holes all over the Bills' roster, but he's willing to let the front office apply the spackle without criticism from him.

Bills comment on Erie County's passage of lease deal

A statement from Russ Brandon, Buffalo Bills president and chief executive officer, on the Erie County Legislature's vote to approve the lease extension with the team:

On behalf of the entire Buffalo Bills organization, we want to thank the Legislature for their support. We also want to thank Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz and Deputy County Executive Rich Tobe for their continued support and tireless efforts throughout this process.
