Road to the Draft: Greg Reid

By Jay Skurski

Greg Reid

Position: Cornerback
School: Florida State
Measurements: 5-foot-8, 190 pounds
40 time: TBA (will run at Pro Day March 18). 225-pound bench press: 10 times
2012 stats: Missed season because of torn ACL in left knee
Draft projection: Undrafted free agent

Lowdown: Talented cover corner has good ball skills. Best attribute is his return skills. He’s an electrifying playmaker who looked like he might challenge some of Deion Sanders’ return records at Florida State. Superior vision in the open field.

Undersized cornerback who would strictly play the nickel position at the NFL level. … Gives up too many big plays. ... Missed 2012 season at Division II Valdosta State because of torn ACL in his left knee.

Five-star recruit coming out of Lowndes County High School in Valdosta, Ga., Reid was named to four different All-American teams, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution All-Classes Georgia Player of the Year and the AAAAA Georgia Player of the Decade. Looked ready to live up to the hype as a freshman with the Seminoles, when he led the NCAA FBS in punt return average at 18.4 yards per return. Started as an outside cornerback in 2010, making three interceptions, three forced fumbles and 14 pass break-ups. … Career went off the tracks starting in September 2011, when he was arrested for perjury and resisting arrest. Charges were later dropped, but he was arrested again in July 2012 for driving on a suspended license and possession of marijuana, leading to his dismissal from the Seminoles. Enrolled at Division II Valdosta State, but never played a down because the injury. Originally considered a second- or third-round prospect after 2011 season for Florida State, but could go undrafted now because of injury and character concerns.

He said it: “It was the toughest time I ever went through in my life. Right then, in my head, I was like ‘I'm not going to let it tear me down.’ I'm going to do what I have to do to make this right. – Reid, speaking to the Detroit Free Press, about his dismissal from Florida State and injury.
