Road to the Draft: Justin Pugh

By Mark Gaughan

Justin Pugh

Position: Guard
School: Syracuse
Measurements: 6-foot-4, 307 pounds.
40 time: 5.14 seconds. Vertical jump: 28.5 inches. 225-pound bench press: 22 repetitions.
2012 stats: 9 games, 9 starts.
Draft projection: Late first round

Lowdown: Pugh enters the draft with a resume comparable to that of ex-Bill Andy Levitre four years ago. Like Levitre, Pugh played tackle in college and is a light-on-his-feet pass protector. His mobility is his strength. He can get to linebackers on the second level of the defense and make blocks. Also like Levitre, his arms are a tad short, which is why he projects better as a guard in the NFL. Levitre’s arms measured 32.5 inches coming out of Oregon State. Pugh’s measure 32 inches. (By comparison, Bills tackle Cordy Glenn has arms that measure 35 1/8 inches.) Pugh started 34 of 34 games played. He’s leaving college a year early, but he completed a degree in finance. A native of rural Holland, Pa., Pugh’s favorite sport as a youngster was hockey, and he idolized Wayne Gretzky.

He said it: “I played three seasons of good football not knowing I had these short arms,” Pugh said at the NFL Scouting Combine. “And now going into it I feel I can play tackle. And all the teams have told me I’m going to play tackle until I can prove I can’t.”
