Road to the Draft: Tyler Eifert

By Mark Gaughan

Tyler Eifert

Position: Tight end
School: Notre Dame
Measurements: 6-foot-5, 250 pounds
40 time: 4.68 seconds. Vertical jump: 35.5 inches. 225-pound bench press: 22 repetitions.
2012 stats: 50 catches, 683 yards, 4 TDs.
Draft projection: First round.

Lowdown: Eifert enters the draft as a more "complete package" that most tight ends coming out of college football. He has great hands and he’s a good blocker. He has experience being split out in the slot or lining up as a traditional tight end. His workout numbers are similar to those of New England’s Rob Gronkowski, although the Pats’ All-Pro has a more physical build and more power. Eifert is not a mauler as a blocker, but he can use his leverage and be effective. Eifert caught 63 passes for 803 yards as a junior and 50 passes for 683 yards as a senior. He probably will be picked in the middle to late first round.

He said it: Eifert on his blocking: “That has been what everyone said I was lacking. So I've spent a lot of time working on my blocking with coaches, working on the technique things, the little things, the footwork, hand placement. Just the little things which makes a big difference. … I think I'm better, I'm still not where I want to be. There is still a lot of room to improve. I've made a conscious effort
to improve and I think I have.”
