Road to the Draft: Tyler Wilson

By Mark Gaughan

Tyler Wilson

Position: Quarterback
School: Arkansas

Measurements: 6-foot-2, 218 pounds
2012 stats: 3,387 yards, 62.1 percent completions, 21 TDs, 13 INTs
Draft projection: Second round

Lowdown: Wilson looked like a high first-round draft pick after his junior season, but the Arkansas program melted down last year after the offseason firing of coach Bobby Petrino, and Wilson’s draft stock took a hit. He has good accuracy. His feet are pretty good. He has decent pocket awareness and can elude rushers, although he’s not an elite athlete. His mobility overall is average. He stays in the pocket and is willing to take hits. He’s a good leader. The problem is his arm strength is not elite. He doesn’t have a rifle. It’s a Ryan Fitzpatrick-type arm. His intangibles are outstanding. … Wilson sat for three years in Fayetteville behind Ryan Mallett. He led the Razorbacks to an 11-3 record in 2011. The team slumped to 4-8 last season. The offensive line broke down and he took a lot of hits. His receiving corps struggled. Wilson’s hands are on the small side -- 8 ¾ inches. Anything under 9 inches is small.

They said it: "Wilson right now is solidly, I think, the fourth quarterback to come off the board. This year obviously circumstances were beyond his control. … Also three wide receivers moved on as well via graduation. So it just didn't fall into place. I think he's an early to mid-second round, at worst an early three. … Tough, a guy that looks down that gun barrel and makes a lot of throws. When the pressure is on him he showed he is tough and would hang in there and make some nice, accurate throws. As tough as they come. Has the toughness of a linebacker." -- ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr.
