Road to the Draft: Zach Ertz

By Mark Gaughan

Zach Ertz

Position: Tight end
School: Stanford
Measurements: 6-foot-5, 249 pounds
40 time: 4.76 seconds. Vertical jump: 30.5 inches. 225-pound bench press: 24 repetitions.
2012 stats: 69 catches, 898 yards, 6 TDs.
Draft projection: Late first round

Lowdown: Ertz is a receiving tight end who probably ranks as the No. 2 tight end in the draft but could push Notre Dame’s Tyler Eifert for the top spot. Ertz is not as good a blocker as Eifert, but he can work the middle of the field in the passing game and has great hands. Ertz improved on his combine numbers at Stanford’s pro day, running a 4.62 in the 40-yard dash and posting a vertical jump of 35.5 inches. He’s a good route-runner. He led the Cardinal in receiving last season and his catch total more than doubled that of Stanford tight end Coby Fleener from the year before. Fleener ran a 4.51-second 40 and was drafted 34th overall by the Colts last year. They’re similar prospects.

He said it: “I think seeing some of the success that some of the Stanford tight ends had in the NFL kind of helps me being an optimist in that sense. I was used all over the field at Stanford, in-line and in the slot and out wide. That versatility is going to help me at the next level.”
