J.C. Tretter, Luke Tasker were almost roommates again

By Jay Skurski

For the past four seasons, Luke Tasker and J.C. Tretter have been roommates on the road with the Cornell football team.

They almost got a chance to do the same at the next level.

Tretter was drafted in the fourth round of the 2013 NFL Draft on Saturday by the Green Bay Packers. Tasker went undrafted, but was close to signing as a free agent with the Packers before ultimately deciding to join the San Diego Chargers.

"I knew it was a very low chance that I'd get drafted, so I expected to be making a decision once free agency came along. The draft went along and about halfway through the seventh round I got contacted by the Chargers saying that it was looking like I would have a spot in free agency if I wanted it,"Tasker said. "We also heard from the Packers around that time too. Kind of the same thing, they said if some things worked out the way they thought they might, I would probably have a spot there.

"When the seventh round ended, me and my agent were both on the phone with these teams going back and forth. The Packers said they had to hear from a couple people before anything was for sure. The Chargers, probably 10 minutes or so after the draft, offered in flat out, they said 'the spot's yours. You can take it right now if you want it.' "

Tasker said the Chargers had shown a lot of interest in the pre-draft process, but he wasn’t sure if their plans had changed after they chose Cal receiver Keenan Allen in the third round.

Tasker said the Packers actually encouraged him to take what was offered.

"They handled it really professionally and really well from my point of view in that they said, 'If you have something right now, you should take it because we really don't know.' That was the process we went through."

So in the end, Tretter and Tasker won't be roommates again.

"It was close,"Tasker said. "That would have been a very strange coincidence."
