Road to the Draft: Chance Warmack

By Mark Gaughan

Chance Warmack

Position: Guard

40 time: 5.49 seconds. Broad jump: 9 feet, 2 inches. Shuttle: 5.01 seconds. 3-cone drill: 7.91 seconds.

Draft projection: First round.

Lowdown: Only one guard in the last 24 years has been drafted in the top 10 of the first round. Warmack could be the next. He’s clearly the top interior offensive line prospect in the draft. Warmack was a unanimous first-team All-America pick and made 40 career starts. He was an anchor of an Alabama offensive line that paved the way to national titles each of the past two years. The Buffalo Bills have an opening at the left guard position in the wake of Andy Levitre's free-agent signing with Tennessee.

The last guard taken in the top 10 was Chris Naeole, who went 10th overall to New Orleans in 1997. Since the Bills took Ruben Brown 14th in 1995, Naeole is the only guard drafted higher. The last guard to be picked in the top five was the University of Pittsburgh’s Bill Fralic, who went second to Atlanta in 1985. Fralic played tackle in college, blocking for Dan Marino, but was a right guard in the NFL.

He said it: "I like being physical and explosive," Warmack said at the NFL Scouting Combine. "I like that word a lot, explosive. I consider myself to be very explosive. In terms of where I want to be, I want to be the definition of that word."
