Road to the Draft: Kiko Alonso

By Jay Skurski

Kiko Alonso

Position: Linebacker
School: Oregon
Measurements: 6-foot-3, 238 pounds
40-yard dash: 4.74 seconds. Vertical: 30.5 inches. Broad jump: 9 feet, 9 inches.
2012 stats: 81 tackles (14 for loss), four interceptions, seven passes defensed, two forced fumbles
Draft projection: Third-fourth round

Lowdown: Alonso is a versatile, three-down linebacker who can play in the middle or outside. Plays with an aggressive, attacking style that would likely appeal to new Bills defensive coordinator Mike Pettine. Will run around, through or even jump over blockers to get to the ball carrier. Has impressive closing speed when finding the ball, which suggests he'd fit best on the weak side. Is athletic enough to match up with running backs or tight ends in the passing game.

Has a solid, muscular build, but was not frequently asked to take on blockers head-on in the Ducks' scheme. Has only one season of starting experience. Willing to push the limits on "playing to the whistle." Does not change direction real well, so will likely be limited to blitzing up the middle of the field, the "A" Gap.

Has both durability and off-the-field concerns. Alonso missed all of the 2010 season because of a suspension for a DUI arrest. He would have missed the season, anyway, as he was rehabbing a torn ACL in his right knee. He was also suspended for the 2011 season opener after he broke into someone's apartment and passed out from intoxication. Has kept his nose clean since then. Alonso did miss one game in 2012 because of a wrist injury. He skipped the Senior Bowl and doing drills at the combine to let that injury fully heal.

He said it: "I think I can play any spot in the 4-3 or the 3-4 defense. I think that's what sets me apart from some other guys -- my versatility."
