Road to the Draft: Ryan Nassib

By Jay Skurski

Ryan Nassib

Position: Quarterback
School: Syracuse
Measurables: 6-foot-2, 227 pounds
40 time: 5.06 seconds. Vertical: 28.5 inches. Broad jump: 8 feet, 9 inches. 20-yard shuttle: 4.53 seconds.
2012 stats: 294 of 471, 3,749 yards, 26 TDs, 10 INTs
Draft projection: First-second round

Lowdown: Nassib played four seasons under current Bills coach Doug Marrone with the Orange, starting the last three. He got better each year, throwing for more yards and touchdowns, and a better passing season to season. … Nassib has a strong arm who can make all the throws required in the NFL. He’s got a good, quick release, strong velocity and is accurate when he throws in rhythm. … Is athletic enough to make some plays with his feet on the run, although he won’t run away from defenders. Big enough to lower his shoulder and pick up the tough yards. A smart player who has experience in different offensive systems, which translates well to the next level.

Not consistent with his footwork in the pocket. Has a tendency to force balls into coverage, which could lead to more turnovers in the NFL against better defensive backs. … Can “sail” his deep ball at times. … A couple inches shorter than is ideal for the position. … Compares in some ways to (gasp) former Bills quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick.

They said it: "Everybody assumes just because we have Coach Marrone that he became in the forefront; he was a good player as we go through our scouting process from beginning of his senior year all the way through. So he was a guy that we were aware of, we went to see him a couple times play just because it's so easy for us to get to Syracuse and to see him play live.

"Obviously he's got a strong arm, can make all the throws. He's got touch, timing, all the things that we look for in a quarterback. And I think when you talk about Ryan his intangibles are all positive. He's kind of an easy guy when you go through the scouting process when you put it all together, you know, it comes out very good." -- Doug Majeski, Bills coordinator of college scouting
