C.J. Spiller says he still anchors Bills' 4x100 relay team

By Mark Gaughan

The Buffalo Bills' addition of University of Texas receiver Marquise Goodwin does wonders for the team's 4x100-meter relay squad, which is a mythical unit, of course.

Goodwin, a third-round draft choice, ran a time of 4.27 seconds in the 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine. the second fastest of any player at the combine since 2006.

Bills running back C.J. Spiller loves the addition of speed to the roster. But he's not ready to acknowledge he's not the fastest man on the roster.

Spiller's electronically timed 40 figure from the combine was 4.37 seconds. However, hand times put him at 4.27 that day. Goodwin said he has been timed in 4.24 manually.

Who would anchor the Bills' 4x100 relay team?

"You can’t go wrong with either one," Spiller said of himself and Goodwin. "We’re both fast guys. I like my chances right now against anybody in the league. If anybody wants to put their four best against our four best I think we’ll come out on top."

Rounding out the Bills' top four sprinters probably would be Ron Brooks, timed at 4.37 seconds, and T.J. Graham, timed at 4.41 at the combine.

Bills scouts had Graham at 4.38 on their watches. Leodis McKelvin might have a say in the quartet. He ran 4.38. Graham competed in the 100 meters at the NCAA track and field championships and has a personal best of 10.37 in the 100.

"We got a lotta playmakers on this team, a lot of people who can do a lot of stuff when you put the ball in their hands, so it’s very exciting," Spiller said.

There are other NFL teams that could put four sub-4.40 runners out on the field, especially with the current rosters at 90 players.

The Tennessee Titans probably would be the favorites in the NFL's track relay competition because they have the best anchor man in running back Chris Johnson. He ran 4.24 out of college in 2008. Titans cornerback Tommie Campbell ran 4.33.

The Detroit Lions would be one of the favorites, too. They have cornerback Chris Houston (4.32), running back Jahvid Best (4.35) and cornerback Darius Slay (4.36).
