Doug Marrone on why Da'Rick Rogers is a risk worth taking

By Jay Skurski

Da'Rick Rogers is one of the more intriguing undrafted free agents signed by the Buffalo Bills in recent memory.

As laid out by The News' Tim Graham, Rogers came to Buffalo determined to put his past -- which includes getting booted out of Tennessee for, among other things, failing three drug tests -- behind him.

Bills coach Doug Marrone spoke after the team's first rookie minicamp about why he felt comfortable taking a chance on Rogers.

"We spent a lot of time with him. ... I've had experiences before, myself as a position coach, coordinator, where we've taken some kids that made mistakes when they were younger. We do believe in giving people second chances, especially when they have shown for a long period of time that they have done a good job," Marrone said. "You have an opportunity. I think I talked to them just like I have spoken to the other players. You have an outstanding opportunity.

"People are going to be watching. It's probably going to be your last shot. As long as you understand that, that is what you get yourself into. It's all on you. You have to make the right decision. Those types of people that make those mistakes, are some going to make them again? Yes. They never really recover from it. Not many people do. We're hoping for him that he does a nice job and he is able to compete. Compete for a spot on our roster."
