Doug Whaley will be introduced as the new general manager of the Buffalo Bills at a news conference today. The Bills have scheduled a media session for 11:30 a.m.
Whaley, 40, has been grooming for the job for the past 3 1/2 years under Buddy Nix, who stepped down from the GM job on Monday.
Whaley was recruited by the Bills from the Pittsburgh Steelers organization in February 2010 to become player personnel director. He was promoted to assistant general manager a year later and got a contract extension in February.
"I always tell people my job is to make Buddy’s job as easy as possible," Whaley said of his role upon getting the contract extension. "I want to go out there –- and for lack of a better term -– be the foot soldier to track down all this information.
"I need to take all the information out there, funnel it to the best three or four choices and give Buddy the options to make that choice. It’s been the same since I got here."
Whaley was a homegrown talent for the Steelers. He graduated from Pittsburgh's Upper St. Clair High School in 1990 and played college football at the University of Pittsburgh as a safety and linebacker.
He broke into scouting in 1995 as an aide with the Steelers. Then he spent three years as an area scout for the Seattle Seahawks before returning to the Steelers. He was responsible for evaluating pro players and advance scouting for Pittsburgh.
Whaley served 10 years in Pittsburgh under general manager Kevin Colbert. The Steelers have one of the most respected scouting operations in the NFL, which is a big reason Whaley long had been mentioned as a prospect for a promotion even before he got to the Bills.
