Mike Williams, Doug Worthington move in opposite directions

By Tim Graham

A couple of hometown kids made NFL news today.

Riverside High grad Mike Williams told reporters he's close to signing a contract extension with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, while St. Francis High alum Doug Worthington was waived/injured by Washington.

Williams had 63 catches for 996 yards and a team-high nine receiving touchdowns last year. His reception and yardage totals were second to Vincent Jackson.

"I see the changes in Mike over the last year," Buccaneers coach Greg Schiano said. "Mike is becoming such a more seasoned pro.

"Mike always had the passion for the game, way back from when I knew him when he was at Syracuse. I mean, this kid loves to play football. But all the little things about being a pro, I think Vincent  has brought that into the room and certainly for Mike and for all those guys."

Washington coach Mike Shanahan announced today Worthington, a fourth-year defensive lineman from Ohio State, had injured a biceps tendon and might need surgery.

Worthington was a Pittsburgh Steelers seventh-round draft choice in 2010. He played in his first six pro games last year for Washington and recorded three tackles.
