Bills down to 86 players after cutting Mickey Shuler, Chris Scott

By Tim Graham

PITTSFORD -- Before the Buffalo Bills could hold a practice, the Turk paid a visit to St. John Fisher College.

The Bills scythed guard Chris Scott and tight end Mickey Shuler, leaving them with 86 players on the roster. That number includes a spot for safety Jairus Byrd.

Teams are allowed to carry 90 players until Aug. 27, when rosters must be trimmed to 75 players.

Bills General Manager Doug Whaley said the Bills do not expect to fill their four openings before the first practice Sunday night in Growney Stadium.

Bills coach Doug Marrone suggested Scott was cut this morning because the Pittsburgh Steelers' fifth-round pick in 2010 reported out of shape.

"It's just unfortunate in this profession," Marrone said. "We have expectations of coaches, coming in, and we didn't feel Chris fulfilled his expectations to us, his teammates or the coaches. So we let him go."

The Bills didn't explain why they cut Shuler, but he likely was dropped as a personnel decision. Shuler had a tiny chance to make the final roster.
