Chances nil for Bills, Jairus Byrd to broker deal by deadline

By Tim Graham

The chances of the Buffalo Bills and Jairus Byrd agreeing to a multiyear contract today have flat-lined.

There is no progress to report and no talks are expected by the 4p.m. deadline for franchise-tagged players to sign multiyear deals, two sources familiar with negotiations (or the lack thereof) told me this morning.

Once the 4 p.m. deadline passes, the Bills and Byrd are prohibited from signing a contract longer than one year. They wouldn't be allowed to renegotiate that contract until after the 2013 season.

The next date for the Bills to watch is July 26, when players report to St. John Fisher for training camp. More realistically, the next deadline for Byrd will be the start of the regular season, when he would start to lose game checks. Players don't get paid until then.

Among the eight NFL players who received a franchise designation this year, Byrd is the only one unsigned after Denver Broncos left tackle Ryan Clady agreed over the weekend to a five-year deal reportedly worth $52.5 million.

A team could sign Byrd to an offer sheet, but franchise-tag rules give the Bills the right to match the offer. If the Bills decline to match, then they will receive two first-round draft choices as compensation.
